They say that for beauty you have to suffer. But sometimes it’s the other way around, as actress Sofía Vergara (51) dons a disheveled wig, fake nose and crooked yellow teeth for the role of real-life drug lord Griselda Blanco. “It was torture,” recalls the Colombian beauty on the set of the Netflix project Griselda. However, the counter-task in this six-part miniseries moved her to a higher level of her career (e.g. for the last three years she sat on the jury of talent competitions America’s Got Talentsimilar to ours Czech Slovakia has talent).

Both women are from cocaine-infamous Colombia. “My brother was part of this business. They killed him in the 90s. One of the reasons she was able to do so much was actually because she was a woman. And no one thought a woman was capable of doing all the terrible things she did,” says Vergara. However, Blanco also paid the price for her activities: she was sentenced to 20 years in prison in America, and after her conditional release from prison in 2012, an unknown gunman executed her on the street with two bullets to the head.

The end justifies the means

Vergara first drew attention to herself at the age of seventeen with a Pepsi soda commercial that was widely broadcast in Latin America. After moving to the USA, she worked mainly on television, her most successful projects include the series Such a modern family from 2009-2020. An 81% rating on the Czechoslovak Film Database also testifies to audience satisfaction. However, in the discussion on the Facebook account of the series (see link below), there are also critical remarks. “Happy birthday to a terrible actress. The highest paid actress for her breasts, not her skills,” commented one viewer wryly.

Vergara knows that, of course. He pays maximum attention to his physical advantages, not in spite of them, but precisely because of them. “If someone told me to put cement under my eyes because it would make me look better, I would do it,” she told People magazine with a laugh. She washes her hair every day (as a natural blonde she has to darken it to look enough latino because of their roles). And she takes care of her skin by wrapping it all up to the neck in plastic, anointed with coconut oil. Does it have any flaws? “I’m impatient, I’m late everywhere and I don’t cook. I also throw away a lot of money,” Vergara calculates.

None of this bothered her husband. Nevertheless, this year she divorced actor Joe Manganiello (47) after seven years. “My marriage ended because my husband was younger. He wanted children and I didn’t want to be an old mother,” she explained to the Spanish newspaper El País. She had her only child, her son Manolo, at the age of 19. And a bit of a struggle with his addiction to sweets. “I’ve come to terms with it. I’ve tried many things, even hypnosis, but it doesn’t work. So I try to stick to a balanced diet. I eat healthy so I can have sweets,” admits Sofía Vergara. Nothing human is foreign to her, the Greek playwright Menandros would say…
