Life expectancy in the EU is higher than before covid | iRADIO

--

Last year, life expectancy in the European Union reached a higher level than it was before the covid-19 pandemic. This is shown by the data published by the European statistical office Eurostat on Friday. Countries in the southern part of Europe, such as Spain, Italy and Malta, record the highest life expectancy. The lowest figure is then in Romania, Bulgaria or Latvia. The Czech Republic, where life expectancy has increased, achieves better results than other countries in the eastern part of the European Union.

In connection with the covid-19 pandemic, life expectancy saw a significant drop in 2020 and 2021. In 2019 this figure was 81.3 years, in 2020 it dropped to 80.4 years and in 2021 to 80.1 years. It then started to grow again from 2022 and last year, according to Eurostat’s first estimate, it was 81.5 years.

Last year, 18 EU states saw an improvement compared to 2019, but in six countries life expectancy still did not reach the level of 2019. These are Germany, Estonia, Greece, Austria, the Netherlands and Finland.

In the Czech Republic last year, life expectancy reached exactly 80 years, which is roughly nine months more than in 2019. In the European Union, the Czech Republic is neither among the winners nor among the states with the worst statistics.

Spain has the highest life expectancy at 84 years, followed by Italy and Malta. Life expectancy is under 77 in Bulgaria, Romania, Latvia and Hungary.

Life expectancy is a statistical estimate of the age that people born in a certain year can live to on average. It is calculated taking into account the mortality rate and its structure in a given year.

The figure is influenced by a large number of factors, from the state of the economy to crime and the environment to, for example, the quality of health care. In 2020 and 2021, however, the covid-19 pandemic had a major impact on this figure in the EU and in other parts of the world.
