A female passenger in a convoy at Sunday’s Freedom Celebration in Pilsen pulled a Nazi flag out of the car. And as the video on social networks shows, she waved it several times in the direction of the audience. The case is already being investigated by the police, who know the identity of the two suspects. The Freedom Convoy is a reminder of the liberation of Pilsen from the Nazis.

“We know about the incident and we are dealing with it, so I can’t tell you anything at this stage,” Jana Komišová from the marketing department of the Pilsen municipality, which organizes the Freedom Celebrations, did not want to comment too much on the event.

“Such behavior is completely unacceptable and should be strongly condemned. The police are already investigating the case. I believe that the perpetrators will be punished according to the applicable legislation,” said Pilsen Mayor Roman Zarzycký (ANO). According to his information, they were not members of traditional military clubs, but an individual participant in the convoy.

“They are jeepers, they have nothing to do with us. The police are already looking into it, they know about it, I’ve already talked to them,” said Pavel Rogl, commander of the Military History Club of the 16th Armored Division, one of the main organizers of the convoy. The club had the most members and equipment in the convoy.

Liberation from the Nazis

Freedom celebrations annually commemorate the liberation of Pilsen in May 1945 by American troops. On Sunday, the Freedom Convoy with more than 300 historic American military vehicles passed through the city. Tens of thousands of people go to the event every year.

Twenty jeeps carried the descendants of the American and Belgian veterans who liberated the city in May 1945. Along the almost five-kilometer route, thousands of people stood on both sides of the roads, in windows and on houses, some with American and Czech flags and lilacs.

The convoy drove through the main Klatovská třída and Rooseveltova Street to the vast Republic Square, which was completely full. People could see some of the cars and talk to the relatives of the veterans.
