Vietcong. Operation Flashpoint. Arma. Hidden & Dangerous… And from today i Gray Zone Warfare. A new name has just been added to the list of excellent tactical shooters from Czech video game developers. The Brno studio Madfinger Games, led by Mark Rabas, is behind it, for which the novelty is a rather surprising work. Madfinger made his name in the world not with ambitious computer games, but with mobile titles.

Czech games have a name in the world. But getting into the top ten of the most anticipated titles on the Steam platform? That says something. And that’s exactly what happened Gray Zone Warfare succeeded. The game from Brno reached the lucky seventh place in the world ranking of titles that users of the largest online video game store write in their wishlists.

Today, you can finally turn your wish into a game. Gray Zone Warfare it is released on Steam in early access, i.e. in a non-final and still continuously developed and improved, but fully playable version. The basic version of the game costs 900 crowns, those interested in extra game equipment or cosmetic improvements can pay extra for more expensive versions, up to 2,500 crowns for the most ardent supporters.

Gray Zone Warfare is a realistic action game in which you go to the fictional South Asian island of Lamang, where three groups of mercenaries clash in jungles and urban areas on 42 square kilometers. It promises authentic firefights, ballistics simulation or the use of real tactics. But perhaps also such a degree of realism that requires the treatment of injuries or the fulfillment of the basic needs of food and drink from the players. All of this is aimed at multiplayer online battles, but you can also encounter computer-controlled enemies.

“We have a clear idea of how to create a modern, realism-based tactical military action. I’m really happy that we’ve managed to create a unique, detailed game and we’re ready to put it in the hands of players.” says Marek Rabas, an experienced developer and one of the founders of Madfinger Games, about the game’s release. The one a few days ago by the way https://twitter.com/MarekRabas/status/1784215760920793346that from the base price of the game after taxes, fees and licenses, the authors will retain roughly half the amount.

“We are targeting hardcore players. But of course Call of Duty fans are also welcome if they fancy a change and a bigger challenge.” adds Tomáš Nawar from the Brno company’s marketing for CzechCrunch. An unprecedentedly hardcore – and therefore realistic – gaming experience Gray Zone Warfare moreover, a person perfectly called to do so took care of it.

Madfinger was assisted in the creation of the game by Ondřej “Spicy” Spisar, a former operator of the 601st Special Forces Group of the Army of the Czech Republic deployed in Afghanistan or Mali. “Don’t expect it to be a crazy shooter. It is the maximum approach to reality. And not always when one shoots, one wins. Good missions are also those where no shots are fired and the mission is still accomplished.” described the veteran in an interview with CzechCrunch.

For a soldier who spent nineteen years in the service, the game reminded him of reality even in seemingly small things, not only in the accuracy of weapons and equipment. “The overall feeling of the game is like the real thing. You’re sneaking through the bushes and the twigs are blocking your view. Or when in one mission in the game you get into a helicopter, you fly away from the valleys and the trees move, it reminded me of moments from the missions.” zoomed in on “Spicy”.

Up to 48 players can complete up to 150 game tasks at the same time, those on the tropical island are complemented by thousands of characters with their own artificial intelligence. “In addition to fulfilling Mark Rabas’ vision of a realistic shooter, Gray Zone Warfare also fulfills his ideas inspired by the Strugack brothers’ sci-fi novel Picnic on the Road,” Tomáš Nawar refers to the mysterious zone in the middle of the game map, which apparently hides the secret and the reason for the clash of mercenary units.

Gray Zone Warfare is a huge professional turnaround for Madfinger Games. Rabas’ company got rid of its portfolio of successful mobile games some time ago, which made it one of the largest Czech game studios. And she traded her phones for a hardcore computer game. How the rarely seen change in the direction of video game development has worked out, you can try it yourself now and get Gray Zone Warfare on Steam.

In preliminary but fully playable access, the game may stay there for a very long time, according to the developers: “Gray Zone Warfare is a long-term project that we intend to develop and improve until we achieve the ultimate gaming experience. We will regularly release updates with new content and optimize the game. The approximate duration may be several years, depending on community feedback and the fulfillment of our vision.”
