Deputies eased the ban on building warehouses and shops on the most fertile land

--

The bill, which is now headed to the Senate, worked from the beginning to prohibit the construction of warehouses and shops larger than a hectare on prime land.

He does not directly mention building factories. However, investors pointed out that the current production operations cannot do without storage space, with some exceptions, so the ban would also affect them.

According to the amendment, which was supported by all parties in the House, strategic infrastructure constructions and related projects, such as fuel filling stations and transshipment points at railways, will be exempted.

In the following years, the ban will not apply to land that will be marked as buildable in municipal land plans as of January 1, 2025. It will be possible to build on them until the beginning of 2035.

“It is a compromise that, on the one hand, will ensure the protection of our agricultural land and, on the other hand, will not block the development of cities, municipalities, but also our economy,” commented Jan Bureš of the ODS, who introduced the changes.

According to the Minister of the Environment Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL), the approval of the law will lead to better soil protection.

Although the current law also allows for the removal of the highest quality land only on the assumption of strong public interest, in practice, construction is actively carried out on these sites as well.
