There are more new HIV cases this year than last year and the year before

The share of foreigners in the number of newly infected with the HIV virus began to rise from 2022, when hundreds of thousands of refugees from Ukraine came to the Czech Republic. In 2022, refugees made up almost 57 percent of the total number of 292 newly infected, and last year it was less than 53 percent.

Since March 2022, 759 HIV-positive refugees from Ukraine, 270 men and 489 women, have come to the Czech Republic.

In the first quarter, 32 HIV-positive people from Ukraine with refugee status arrived in the Czech Republic. “From mid-2023, the monthly numbers of newly registered HIV-positive refugees remain roughly at the same level of around ten cases,” the reference laboratory said in a comment on the published data.

“The proportion of refugees who knew about their HIV positivity has been decreasing over the years,” added the laboratory. There were over 90 percent of them the year before, 66 percent last year, and 53 percent in the first quarter of this year.

Cases of HIV infection and AIDS have been monitored in the Czech Republic since 1985. Since then, 4,693 people have been diagnosed with the virus, 890 have developed AIDS, and 398 have succumbed to it. This year, in the first quarter, 85 percent of new cases are in men, and 60 percent of those infected were transmitted through sexual contact between men. There were seven new cases of infection developing into AIDS in the first three months of the year.

The HIV virus attacks lymphocytes, which are essential for immunity. After infection, their number drops sharply within six weeks, then the decline stops and the health of the infected person improves. Gradually, however, this type of white blood cells decreases again for up to eight years, after which the AIDS disease breaks out. Without treatment, patients die within a few years. Currently, infected people can use modern drugs that practically stop the progress of the disease.
