Max Verstappen dominated Friday’s races in preparation for the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix. The three-time world champion in the colors of Red Bull won free practice and the shoot-out for Saturday’s sprint.

The Dutchman beat Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by a tenth of a second. But he wasn’t thrilled with his shootout attempt.

“To be honest, it was pretty awful. “Maybe in that last part it was challenging to get the tires to work, just like in SQ2,” said Verstappen.

“SQ3 was similar for me. I didn’t improve on the soft set, but somehow we got to first place and I’m happy about that.

“For some reason, the ride wasn’t as pleasant as it was in practice, where I felt confident and at ease, but it wasn’t like that in qualifying.”

However, the final part of the shootout did not work out for the other drivers either. For example, McLaren’s Lando Norris, who was fastest in the second part on the medium set of tires, was only ninth on the soft set in the SQ3.

“I honestly don’t know, it could be the shape of the circuit. After practice I thought we could fight for pole position, but then in the shootout I didn’t have that feeling anymore, but somehow we finished first again. But I don’t know what happened to the other cars in that last lap,” added Verstappen.

Perez third

With a loss of 235 thousandths to his teammate, Sergio Pérez took third place.
