The leader of the Czech defense at the domestic championship will be Radko Gudas, who plays in the NHL for Anaheim. He could hear the invitation to the championship also because his Ducks were the third worst team in the NHL and did not look at the elimination fights. Even last year, he enjoyed Florida’s campaign all the way to the Stanley Cup finals. The native of Prague scored 748 games and 182 points in twelve seasons in the regular season of the NHL.

But the club from the west coast of the United States brought him not only for mentoring young players in the Ducks organization, but also for the hard game, when he gives out a number of uncompromising hits. During the last training sessions, the assistant of captain Roman Červenka trained in a defensive pair with Jakub Krejčík from Sparta.

Elite Swedish defense

Eighteen hockey players from the NHL will present themselves in Ostrava Sweden. Like the Czech team, the Swedes have a complete trio of goalkeepers from the NHL – Filip Gustavsson with Jesper Wallstedt from Minnesota and Samuel Ersson from Philadelphia. The biggest strength of the northerners will be the defensive lines, five backs can boast a great name overseas – Rasmus Dahlin from Buffalo, Erik Karlsson with Marcus Pettersson from Pittsburgh, Jonas Brodin from Minnesota and Victor Hedman from Tampa Bay.

Karlsson, a three-time winner of the Norris Trophy for the best defenseman in the NHL, made history last season, in which he collected a famous 101 points. He played over a thousand games in the best league in the world, this year he was traded to Pittsburgh.

Slovak number one and number two in the draft

After two preparatory losses against the Czech hockey players, he joined the team Slovakia added a total of eight reinforcements from the NHL, led by productive New Jersey forward Tomáš Tatar or Washington defenseman Martin Feherváry.

Juraj Slafkovský, the first-ever Slovakian number one in the NHL draft (2022), has made a decent step in his career. In 82 games of the regular season, he recorded twenty goals and 30 assists and improved his career best with 50 Canadian points. During the selection of talents at the time, defender Šimon Nemec, who played 60 games this season, was next in line after Slafkovský.

Reichel finally arrives

The strong team was put together by the coach of last year’s world vice-champions from Germany Harold Kreis. Chicago striker Lukas Reichel was absent from the German nomination for the World Cup, but according to local media, there has been a twist and the nephew of Czech legend Robert Reichel will arrive in Ostrava for the fights. Reichel already played in the championship in 2021 and 2022.

The 17th pick of the 2020 draft fully made it into the Blackhawks this season, Reichel played 65 games in which he collected sixteen points for five goals and eleven assists.

Record holder Ambühl

A hockey fan at a match Switzerland, which the Czech national team will play on Monday, May 13 from 8:20 p.m., the name Andreas Ambühl will certainly attract attention. He made his mark in the history of the World Cup with eighteen appearances and 131 duels played. He was not missing in winning the historic silver in 2018. Last May, he became Switzerland’s number one in the number of starts in the national team and will continue to push his record of 321 games.

But coach Patrick Fischer’s biggest star will be defender Roman Josi from Nashville. The 33-year-old Josi was the top scorer among NHL defensemen this year with 23 goals and is the Swiss with the most games (909) and points (686) in NHL history.

The Finns want to correct last year

The opening opponent of the Czech national team, Finland, brought four reinforcements from the NHL to Prague. The first center of Jukka Jalonen’s selection will be Mikael Granlund from San Jose, who has already played 819 games in Nashville or Minnesota, scoring 544 points.

The offensive driving force of the team will be the four-time participant of the World Cup, Columbus striker Johnny Gaudreau. However, he has not had a good year behind him and is looking in vain for the form from the year 2021/22 in the Columbus jersey, when in 82 games of the regular season, he collected 115 points for 40 goals and 75 assists. “Johnny Hockey” was also a member of the legendary junior team that dominated the 2013 U20 World Cup.

After a year in the Czech Republic, the two-time world championship participant is moving to Germany, where he signed a contract with the Eisbären Berlin team.

Kamil Walega can be proud of the fresh title for the champion of the extra league, but he did not participate in any match in the playoffs.

The only signing from the NHL
