SpaceX intends to implement the first purely commercial spacewalk, or extravehicular activity (EVA). And that during the Polaris Dawn mission, which should take place this summer.

“It’s the first commercial EVA. This is the first time such a mission has not been undertaken by government astronauts,” Commander Jared Isaacman said during a discussion on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

“This is important because one day we will get to the moon or Mars. We will have to get out of our vehicles, leave the safety of our habitats, and explore, build and repair things,” he added.

The main goal of this particular EVA will be to thoroughly test SpaceX’s new spacesuits. These will be worn by all crew members (Crew Dragon does not have an airlock, so you will enter space directly from the cabin).

If there are no complications, according to foreign commentators, this event could pave the way for other private spacewalks.

For the sake of completeness, let us add that the Polaris program, which is financed by Isaacman, includes a total of three missions, the last of which should be the flight of the planned Starship spacecraft with a crew.
