It should have been one of the symbols of a common European Union, instead it is constantly being pushed aside. The planned bridge for tourists across the Lužická Nisa near Hrádek nad Nisou was supposed to connect three countries – the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany, which share a common border at that point. But the border region of Trojzemí is still waiting for a footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists, pointed out Czech Radio Liberec.

An ode to joy sounds and the Czech Republic and Poland remind each other that they joined the European Union together 20 years ago. But the bridge that was supposed to connect them with Germany and lead across the Lužická Nisa in Trojzemí near Hrádek nad Nisou is still missing.

During the Trojzemí celebrations in April 2024, two temporary footbridges were laid across the Nisa. How did the visitors like it?

Due to the festivities, two temporary bridges were built, on which people take pictures.

According to the mayor of Hrádek, Josef Horinka (Mayors for the Liberec Region), there is still no hope that the bridge will be built in the near future. And it is not a reluctance to come to an agreement, but rather legislative problems.

“Even though all three mayors of Hrádek, Bogatyn and Žitavy tried to build a footbridge for cyclists and pedestrians at the Trojzemí point, it simply didn’t work,” he admits.

Standards, rules and processes

The problem is that they failed to get subsidies for the construction. “European Unionit only knows two-way programs, not three-way programs. We never found out why, even though we pointed it out. The third partner would be a tie and his costs would be inconsiderable,” explains the mayor of Hrádek.

The construction of the bridge is also complicated by the fact that, although the countries of the European Union have a lot in common, the construction standards are not. “Each country kept its identical construction law. And there’s nothing you can do about it,” he adds.

His words are also confirmed by Hedvika Zimmermannová from the Small Triangle Association of Cities, which consists of the Czech Hrádek nad Nisou, the Polish Bogatyn and the Saxon Žitava. “Different processes, different standards. We come across it often here in the Trinity,” he says.

“That it is a flood zone on three territories… No one can imagine such obstacles.Whenever we have the strength, we get down to it, then we find out that the intergovernmental commission will meet again in a year,” he complains. Zimmermann.

Crowds of people flowed across both makeshift bridges in the center. “It’s a shame that the bridge isn’t here permanently. It would be nice if you can get from Germany to the other side to the surrounding countries. And not that you just have to stand here and look across the river, because nobody does anything about it,” complain the locals.

“The project was already prepared, but it coincided with the fact that it would only be in the next period. But one day it will be. We are persistent,” Zimmermann hopes.

120 million crowns

The original design featured a footbridge in the shape of a circle for pedestrians and cyclists. However, due to different standards, it gradually grew into the form of an almost highway bridge for 120 million crowns.

“Everyone wants a bridge, but no one wants to pay what came out of the technical designs. It’s a huge amount. We don’t need a bridge like on the freeway,” he criticizesthe mayor of Zittau, Thomas Zenker.

However, the new documentation is not being worked on yet. The cities are considering announcing a new competition, which will focus not only on the form of the bridge, but also on the transformation of the entire Trojzemi.
