In recent years, a lot of passionate debates have arisen around the automatic shutdown and restart systems of car engines, usually about its effect on the life of the engine, starter or battery. At least in the case of the latter, Toyota believes it can withstand almost anything.
We probably don’t need to remind you of our opinion on the start-stop system, a colleague already wrote a philippic on this topic in 2011, which still resonates today. We considered this solution and we consider it to be one of the biggest nonsense of modern cars, which has spread in them so powerfully and in such a way only because it can significantly reduce the standard consumption of the car in the official test. These are directly proportional to CO2 emissions, which in particular in the European Union result in huge fines for exceeding the so-called fleet limits. That’s why car companies suddenly took an idea that had long been proven to be commercially unfeasible and turned it into an almost complete standard. All it took was a stronger starter, a bigger battery, a bit of software, and voila, consumption dropped by a few decimeters.
We are not saying that it may not drop like that in real life, if you slide along the highway in the morning, the effect can be even greater, even if you only drive a few kilometers. But it is also true that if you drive on the highway from Prague to Paris, the result will most likely be a net zero, even if you drive more than a thousand kilometers. The main problem was and is elsewhere – at what cost does this system save fuel? The constant turning off and turning on of the engine has proven to destroy even the most modern units, and I would say for myself that another thing annoys me even more – that the system calmly turns off your engine just before you want to start at the intersection from the side, etc. Then there is the risk of worse things . So for me, there is no case where I would not turn off the start-stop immediately after starting.
But back to the technical implications, which are not only related to the engine itself. The system also stresses the battery, which can last less, but also stresses the starter, which used to actually be used for a handful of engine starts during the entire life of the car, suddenly there can be thousands and thousands of them. How long will it last? We don’t have an answer to that, but we can tell you what Toyota thinks about the durability of its starters used for this purpose.
We learn this information thanks to Faye Hadley, a certified Toyota technician, who posted a video on TikTok about just how many starts a Toyota equipped with start-stop will allow the starter to realize before simply throwing in the towel and reporting the need to replace the starter. If you don’t want to watch the video, we’ll tell you right away that it’s 384,000 starts. Three hundred eighty four thousand. Then the start is amen.
That’s a huge number, as the Jalopnik colleagues who pointed out the video calculate — you’d have to have the car start and stop 21 times a day for 50 years to reach that tally. But it’s just a sign of Toyota’s faith, not an actual limit – the starter can last less, it can eventually last even more. However, the automaker’s belief that it can handle such a quantum of operations suggests that in the case of the lifespan of anything, the main problem will not be in the starter…
