Toyota continues to go against the grain, the new 2.8-liter diesel goes on sale worldwide

Any new diesel engine intended for even the most advanced markets is a rarity these days, let alone one this bulky. But Toyota consistently claims that it sees the future in internal combustion engines. And apparently it’s not just empty words.

Last year, 1,216,780 new cars were sold in Australia, the best result in the continent’s history. Toyota became the leader among manufacturers, but the Japanese probably didn’t have much reason to celebrate. Their market share fell from 21.2 to 17.7 percent year-on-year. And it was also unpleasant for them that the Hilux pick-up was dethroned from the throne of the key segment by the Ford Ranger after seven years of reigning among the models. The latter accounted for 63,356 registrations, while the Japanese representative had to make do with 61,111 cars sold.

The brand’s representation there had evidently already realized during the year that the fight was getting tougher. And that’s why work began on the third facelift of this model. From a visual point of view, this mainly concerns the front parts, as an octagonal front mask and a redesigned bumper have arrived for this year. But everything else remains the same, that is, except for the body lid, which received gas struts to facilitate all operations. However, all other novelties already lie in the differently painted details of the individual equipment levels.

The interior remains the same, in the case of some equipment levels, only the standard elements have been expanded. For example, the SR version has front and rear parking sensors, while the SR5, Rogue and GR Sport variants can count on wireless charging of mobile phones and two USB ports at the back. For the biggest change, it is necessary to head under the hood, where we can find the novelty introduced last year – a new or properly upgraded 2.8-liter turbodiesel, which also works with mild-hybrid technology. It consists of an electric motor/generator, a small lithium battery and a converter, and its main task is, of course, to increase operational efficiency.

According to Toyota, owners of the hybrid system can count on a 6 to 10 percent reduction in fuel consumption compared to the previous version of the same engine, while other modifications should also reduce noise and vibration. The technical parameters remain relatively modest due to the volume of the engine, but in the end it is a four-cylinder – the turbodiesel has 204 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. The automaker has already paired this powertrain as standard with the Multi-Terrain Select system, which offers six different driving modes depending on the type of terrain, and with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota is also releasing this new product in Europe, we already know that since last year, but it obviously intends to use it all over the world. This is extremely unusual at the turn of 2023 and 2024, it is even the only engine to be available for Hilux practically everywhere. You can even buy only that one here, in such a Germany it is then possible to reach for a 2.4-liter diesel with 150 horses, and Australians can also have a 2.7-liter gasoline version. The fact that practically all world markets are united by the most powerful “soot producer” speaks volumes. At the very least, that Toyota’s words about internal combustion engines being the future, not the past, aren’t just empty statements.
