If you stuck a big grille on the front of this car, it would become a completely bland, unremarkable anonymous car from the crowd. From the front wheels to the back, the body of the MG5 is interchangeable with many other generic station wagons of recent years – although it must be admitted that more of the past decades, because station wagons have not sold much in Europe in the last, say, five years, they have been supplanted by SUVs and crossovers, and can be found today in for the car manufacturer’s model range, a real station wagon is an increasingly rare thing.

I think it’s a shame, because next to the many fashionable crossovers, the station wagon is usually a significantly more practical choice. It has a larger and often more practically shaped luggage compartment, and it also has a lower center of gravity, so it is easier to adjust to pleasant driving characteristics. Which, of course, does not mean that the manufacturer always pays attention to it and is able to benefit from it. But the MG5 is a very good station wagon, at least for its class. The basic volume of the trunk is 479 liters, the rear seat is divided in a ratio of 40:60, the trunk has an adjustable floor and so on.

It is true that here and there you will find some inferior materials or exposed hinges in the trunk, and the space above the heads of the rear passengers is not exactly miraculous, but in the given class there are no surprising shortcomings. I was a little more disappointed by the infotainment, which looks significantly better than before the facelift, and at first it seemed to be faster and clearer. But then it started getting stuck and I had to restart it several times. In general, I feel that the electronic equipment deserves to be fine-tuned more carefully.

On the other hand, the electric drive is sized reasonably. You can either choose a model with a smaller battery (50kWh) and a more powerful electric motor (177 hp), or choose a 100,000 CZK more expensive model with a long range, which I had in the test. It has a battery with a capacity of just over 61 kWh and an electric motor with a power of 156 hp. It’s not an asphalt ripper, but it’s flexible enough, it’s enough for overtaking and I didn’t feel like I was lacking in power. I simply didn’t need significantly more of it, but if there was less of it, I might have been cursing. The MG 5 is an interesting car that surprised me with something every day. I have summarized three pleasant and three less pleasant surprises for you in the video.
