The American, the first man in space… NASA amused and angered the networks with the memory

The American National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said on Sunday on social networks that in May 1961, the American Alan Shepard was the first man in space. People are laughing now that the “geniuses at NASA” forgot that the first man in space was the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. “Or is it an attempt to rewrite history?” others ask.

At the weekend, NASA published a post about the planned flight to the International Space Station and on that occasion recalled that in 1961, American Alan Shephard flew on the first mission into space.

“Today is just one day away from the launch of NASA’s Boeing crewed test flight to the International Space Station. This mission will be the first manned mission of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft,” NASA reported.

“63 years ago, Alan Shepard made history when he launched into space as the pilot of the Mercury-Redstone 3 mission. It was the first-ever manned spaceflight,” NASA’s X-Network post continues, commemorating Shepard’s May 5, 1961 orbit around the Earth.

In fact, the first man in space was Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who preceded the American mission by several weeks. On April 12, 1961, Gagarin took off in the Vostok-1 ship from the Baikonur Cosmodrome and successfully landed after 108 minutes of flight above the ground.

Many users responded to the falsehood of NASA’s post, including as part of a community fact-checking feature launched by X Network owner Elon Musk as a way to combat false and misleading information.

“Mercury-Redstone 3 was the first *US* manned space flight, starring Alan Shepard. The first ever manned flight into space was Vostok-1 with Yuri Gagarin,” clarifies the X Network fact sheet below the NASA post.

And many commentators are also surprised.

“And what about Yuri Gagarin?” asks one of them.

Others have a lot of fun with this glaring mistake. “The first man in space, American Alan Shepherd, in color,” said another.

” Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, haaaaa!!!! The geniuses at NASA just got their own fact-checking, that’s awesome,” laugh others.

Others question whether it is incompetence or an attempt to rewrite history. “Are you trying to rewrite history again, or is this just a bad intern who was hired based on inclusion rules instead of merit?” people ask.
