Don’t charge your EVs during peak hours, California urges

It’s only been a few days since the US state of California announced plans to ban the sale of new cars with internal combustion engines from 2035, with the exception of some plug-in hybrids. The state where the Tesla car company is headquartered and where roughly 40% of all electric cars sold in the US are headed is thus to become the first of all 50 to introduce such a date.

But even drivers of electric cars do not have it easy in it, as many local media write. The energy regulatory authority there asks them not to charge their electric cars. The reason is the heat wave that is currently plaguing California and the associated high demands on the distribution network caused by the air conditioners running at full power.

“The three most effective things you can do to save electricity are to set your thermostat to at least 25.5 degrees, not use large electrical appliances or electric car chargers, and turn off unnecessary lights,” says the American Electric Utility Association.

People should limit electricity consumption especially between four and nine o’clock in the evening, requests the operator of the California network. “Reducing electricity consumption during that time will reduce demands on the grid and prevent more drastic measures such as rotating blackouts,” he adds in a press release.

At the same time, no one specifies whether even the slowest charging from a regular household socket, which in the USA gives a voltage of 110 volts, could be problematic for the charging parties, or whether the request only concerns faster charging. It is about limiting electricity consumption overall. Of course, those who would charge their electric car from their own battery storage or from their own solar panels and not from the public network are not affected by the restriction.

“Today, most people charge their electric cars when they get home in the evening – that is, when the demand for electricity is at its peak. If the demands on the electric grid are not managed, the demand for current to charge a large number of EVs will suddenly increase the peak demands and may exceed the capacity of the grid,” says the Faculty of Engineering at Cornell University in New York State.

But at the same time, more chargers will be needed in California to satisfy the growing demand for charging. According to the website My Stateline News, there are currently around 80,000 of them, but by 2030, around 1.2 million will be needed.
