The absurdity of the development of European motoring has gone so far that in the bazaar you can buy a car of an ordinary brand in extremely good condition for a few hundred thousand, which offers an engine that is not even found in new Mercedes of the same class.

Today, if you want a new middle-class car with a six-cylinder, you will have to put a lot of Palacky on the table for expensive German brands. And sometimes even that won’t be enough, such a Mercedes has completely given up on six-cylinder engines in the C-class. For a change, Audi will force you to buy its A4 in the S4 or RS4 versions, because otherwise you will also end up with four-cylinders, only BMW offers gasoline and diesel six-cylinders for the regular versions of the three. But all in time.

A few years ago – sometimes literally – there were also a number of more ordinary cars with six-cylinder engines. And it wasn’t just the notorious ones like the Superb or the Passat, but also those that seem almost unbelievable from today’s point of view – for example the Renault Laguna. The last generation was produced until 2015, and until then it was even available with two six-cylinder engines, while the second one is, from today’s point of view, fascinating without exaggeration.

But let’s start with the first one, which was a gasoline 3.5 V6, which had atmospheric filling and gave 238 horsepower and 330 Nm of torque. This is certainly interesting, but until recently more cars offered a similar engine. But the 3.0 V6 dCi diesel engine with 240 hp and 450 Nm was a rarity even then, with which the car accelerated to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds and reached a top speed of 242 km/h. We’re not kidding, six-cylinder diesel, into the Laguna, in any body style.

At that time, the aforementioned Passat or Superb did not offer a diesel V6 for years – it ended with the first generation in the Superb and with the B5.5 generation in the Passat. Back then, apart from the premium brands, only the Laguna was available with a six-cylinder diesel, and it’s all the more remarkable when we look at Renault’s offer from recent years. Now it offers absolutely nothing in this class, the Talisman station wagon that was available until recently ended under the weight of minimal interest, but the six-cylinder still had no mistake under the hood and said goodbye to at least the two-liter. However, it came to the market (in all seriousness) with the largest diesel in the form of a 1.6 dCi engine. That’s almost half the unit, true with two turbos and 160 horses, but compared to the 235 horse V6, it was just as funny a motor.

If you’d like a V6 diesel Laguna, you can still buy it used. The choice of six-cylinder versions is not large, there are tens of them all over Europe and if you want a small run, you have to go for a coupé (also a remarkable thing in 2015 in this class, right?). A station wagon can be found with a little effort, a sedan is rather a rarity, as it was not offered in most markets.

Of course, the equipment is always top-notch, we are talking about the top of the range, so automatic dual-zone air conditioning, electric and heated front seats or navigation are a matter of course. How current the maps will be and how fresh the infotainment graphics will look is, of course, a slightly different question, but the development in this field has been rapid in recent years.

In the photos below, you can see a very well-preserved coupe with 98,000 km, which you wouldn’t expect to have had such a run-in, it’s in really nice condition. It is currently available for €16,990 (about CZK 417,000) in Sottrum, Germany. No offense to the nine-year-old Laguna, but this is seriously an extra piece. However, at Mercedes today they will ask you more than a million for a Céčko with a diesel four-cylinder, which even this year-old V6 dCi can match in exactly one thing – nothing. The four-cylinder diesel is still a servant without a hint of nobility, the six-cylinder behaves quite differently. And with 240 horses, it drives really effortlessly.

Sure, you have to accept the last Laguna with him, whose strange bow not even all the money in the world can save. And in this case, a coupe that will not be to everyone’s taste. On the other hand, it’s a car you can sit in regularly with love, just because of its engine. New cars tailored to EU requirements, which do not allow a proper power unit even in the spheres in which Mercedes operates, are truly impossible to love because of their engines.

A well-preserved Renault Laguna with a V6 dCi engine is a rarity on the second-hand market, the best you can get is a coupe that has not been driven much. This is one of the nicest ones in the offer, for 417 thousand it will give you a little more than a new Mercedes for three times. Photo: Renault Henke, published with permission
