Quaise is about to drill the deepest well in human history into the Earth’s surface using advanced fusion engineering technology to gain access to an almost limitless source of geothermal energy. This resource can solve the energy crisis that arose during the pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

In recent years, the world has been looking towards green energy. Solar, wind and nuclear energy fall into this category. However, the company Quaise, a spin-off of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) based in the American city of Cambridge, points out that we have another, almost unlimited resource under our feet.

Geothermal energy is heat energy inside our planet. The high temperature of the core fuels the decay of radioactive elements. Where heat is available, energy can be obtained. If we used 0.1 percent of geothermal energy, we would cover the entire world’s needs for 20 million years.

However, due to technological limitations, it was not possible to drill down to this source. A small amount of this energy is available near the Earth’s surface. Much deeper wells are needed.

Mankind managed to dig a well to a maximum depth of 12,289 meters. However, the 1970s Kola Superdeep Borehole project was not successful. The work was stopped by too high temperatures at these depths and lack of funds.

Founded in 2020, Quaise has launched an ambitious project in which it wants to drill to a depth of 20 kilometers. According to information from the newspaper Express, it received a total of 63 million dollars for these purposes.

The deepest well to the greatest energy wealth

The solution offers directed energy drilling, specifically the gyrotron, a technology derived from fusion research.

A gyrotron is a type of maser, i.e. a device amplifying, in this case, millimeter electromagnetic waves with the help of simulated radiation emission. It is an invention from the 1960s that has been used since the 1970s to heat plasma for fusion reactors.

Today, however, there are already gyrotrons generating megawatt beams that can be used to drill into the Earth more efficiently than lasers.

The company can reach a depth of 20 kilometers within a few months. He expects temperatures up to 500 degrees Celsius. In such conditions, all liquid pumped water evaporates. So-called supercritical water is created, from which geothermal power plants obtain energy.

Quaise is currently producing prototypes of equipment capable of being deployed in the field. They are supposed to be in operation by 2024. Only two years later, they want to launch an enlarged version of 100 megawatts. The goal is to switch completely to this type of energy by 2050.

The company wants to use retired coal-fired power plants for mining. The first converted power plant will be launched in 2028. Subsequently, this process will be possible all over the world.
