The court’s decision was won by human rights organizations, which immediately called on the Chinese government to release the independent reporter, writes the Radio Wave website with a link to CNN.

“So far I have no information that Zhang Chan has left prison and been with her family, we are still waiting,” said Jane Wang of the British organization fighting for the journalist’s release.

The former lawyer was one of the few independent reporters in Wuhan, bringing important testimonies about the beginnings of the covid-19 disease pandemic in the Chinese city. At that time, the authorities in the city of eleven million introduced a strict lockdown and an information embargo.

The police arrested the journalist in May 2020. The court then found her guilty of inciting riots and sent her to prison for four years. According to the indictment, the woman sent out false information through texts or videos and “slyly speculated about the covid-19 disease.”

According to CNN, Chinese authorities are persecuting dissidents and human rights activists through similar accusations.

The organization Reporters Without Borders, which awarded the journalist the Press Freedom Award in 2021, called on the authorities for her immediate release throughout the entire period of the reporter’s detention.
