Prague – The new president of the republic will be chosen today by people who are in isolation due to the covid-19 disease. Unlike the first round two weeks ago, only General Petr Pavlo and former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) will be decided. On the contrary, just like 14 days ago, they will be able to vote from their car between 08:00 and 17:00 at polling stations, which are located in five places in Prague and one in each of the districts. According to data from the Ministry of Health, 2,366 people have been diagnosed with covid-19 since last Monday.
Today is the last chance for people who want to participate in the election finals outside their home municipality. Before 4:00 p.m., however, they must apply in person at the municipal office for a voter’s card, after presenting which they will be able to vote on Friday or Saturday, for example during recreation in mountain villages.
In the first round of elections, 354 people used the opportunity to vote from their cars on Wednesday, January 11. Pavel, a former senior representative of the Czech army and NATO, received the majority of the votes, with 180. The chairman and deputy of the ANO movement, Babiš, finished second with 85 votes.
Voters who have a doctor’s or regional hygiene station’s confirmation that they are in isolation due to the coronavirus will be able to vote from their car at designated locations. Those who can prove themselves with a credible documentary or electronic confirmation of a positive test result for the presence of the coronavirus, or who fill out and hand-sign an affidavit in front of the voting committee that they are in isolation, will also be able to vote.
Isolation is ordered by a doctor or hygienist according to current rules after a positive test for covid-19 and is valid for at least seven days or two days after the end of symptoms. Quarantines of persons in risky contact have not been used since last February, yet the Ministry of the Interior includes them in the election rules.
Voters must prove their identity to the commission, including their place of permanent residence, by presenting an identity card or passport. If necessary, the commission will verify the address of permanent residence through the regional office in the basic population register. Voters who would vote with a voter’s card must hand it in to the commission, which will attach it to the list of voters who voted. According to the law, these lists will then be obtained through the regional and municipal offices by the district election commissions, which will supervise the voting on Friday and Saturday. This will prevent the possible multiple voting of the same voter.
While people with covid-19 will only be able to vote for the president from their cars today, people with the coronavirus will be able to vote in a portable ballot box on Friday, January 27 from 08:00 to 22:00 or on Saturday, January 28 from 08:00 to 14:00. They must apply for this method of voting to the locally competent regional office or the Prague municipality no later than Thursday, January 26 by 8:00 p.m. In establishments that would be closed due to the coronavirus, their clients will vote on Thursday from 08:00 to 22:00 and on Friday from 08:00 to 18:00. There was no such device in the first round.
