I started to find out how accurately the optical pulse sensors in the watch measure. First, I just wanted to verify how the Elevate 5 sensor in the latest Garmin models has improved over the previous version. But then I started adding other watches that I came across.
The result was this article with a summary of findings and the results of the first tests.
But I didn’t stop with it. At the time of this writing, I have completed approximately 140 hours of testing – comparing the heart rate from the optical sensors of various watches against a reference measurement using a chest strap. I improved the methodology, automated calculations and visualizations. And I will probably continue with it.
That is why I prepared this article, intended for the presentation of the results. When I measure a new watch or perform another test, I will add new data to the article. You can currently find results for the following models:
- Apple Watch 4
- Apple Watch 9
- Apple Watch Ultra 2
- Garmin Epix Pro
- Garmin Forerunner 965
- Garmin Venu 2 Plus
- Garmin Venu 3
- Huawei Watch GT 4
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 5
