Jan Albrecht about winning, cooking and plans
HOW I HANDLE WINNING
Years ago, I told myself that I would like to combine different jobs so that I still enjoy each one. I definitely want to remain a Wim Hof Method instructor. There are several projects in the gastro sector in progress. I am about to start a company for experiential catering or a detailed restaurant guide.
He won the seventh series of the popular culinary competition MasterChef Czech Republic, the final of which was watched by TV viewers before Christmas. He received two and a half million crowns for it. He makes a living as an instructor of Wim Hof’s method based on proper breathing, staying in the cold and meditation with the aim of improving immunity, mood and reducing stress. He lives in Mladá Boleslav.
WHY I AM TOURING THE CZECH REPUBLIC
I found it unbelievable how many people wrote and congratulated me. I decided to go see them, so a spontaneous idea arose that in the following months I would tour the Czech Republic, restaurants and cook live in them. Such a thank you to the fans.
WHAT WILL I DO WITH THE MONEY?
I’m not the type to have them fluffed up. They can so-called cover my back and give me the opportunity to be a little more free, more creative and not just look back on earnings. I can invest in myself, in education. For example, I can arrange an unpaid internship at a great restaurant.
HOW MANY COOKBOOKS DO I HAVE AT HOME?
Wow, I don’t even know. Maybe around a hundred. I literally browse through them in the bookstore. I loved them since I was little. I couldn’t read yet, but I was already devouring pictures of food. I also watch cooking shows. Cooking has been my great passion since I was a child, mainly thanks to my grandmother, who made a living as a cook.
WHY I AM NOT A COOK
A question that suggests itself, right? After the gym, I worked in the gastroenterology for a long time. First as a waiter. I was drawn to the kitchen, but the fact that you simply have more money on the set also made the decision. As the years went by, I was promoted to management positions and loved my job before it got too much.
HOW I BURNED OUT
We are talking about the time about six years ago. I was working as a restaurant manager and I was completely absorbed by the work. Gradually, I acted somehow unconsciously, automatically. When I stopped enjoying things, I disconnected from my family and started making mistakes without realizing that I was the only one who caused them. Then Wim Hof’s method came into my life and helped me settle down and calm down.
MY BIGGEST HOBBY
Riding a road bike is hard and it hurts, but it’s my big meditation. I drive about seven thousand kilometers a year. True, it was weaker last year, but this year I will drive bombs again.
HOW THE COMPETITION CHANGED ME
I never won anything, not even as a kid in sports. MasterChef showed me that I can be the first. That’s why I started to believe in myself.
Remember Honzo’s victory and the excitement of winning.
Lillien about cooking with dad and a unique studio
WHEN I PUSHED DAD
When we were watching the previous series of the competition, dad was reasoning here and there in front of the TV. When I told him that instead of talking about what others are doing wrong, he should come forward and show how it’s done. This is how I messed something up several times. At first he fidgeted and didn’t sign up for the next series right away, but then he decided he had nothing to lose.
He is instrumental in his dad’s MasterChef success. It was she who suggested and convinced him to apply. “When he won, I was completely beside myself with joy,” says Lilli, who is in her first year studying at the high school expedition school ScioŠkole with an unconventional approach to teaching. She loves dancing and singing. He has an eleven-year-old brother, Teodoro.
HOW WE MANAGED TO KEEP SILENT
The competition was pre-recorded, the final took place in May. The whole family had to sign a non-disclosure agreement. I was quite afraid that I would say something, but it didn’t happen. My classmates picked up a lot, but I always put on a poker face. I would spoil their surprise. We all made it. (Jan: You have to realize that by saying it, you would ruin the work of a lot of people who are behind the competition.)
HOW MUCH I ENJOY COOKING
As a child, I liked to watch my dad and learned a lot from him. During the competition, a lot of people wrote to him that they would like some recipes. That’s why we started making video recipes. I can cook and bake. I’m glad that I can take care of myself without any problems. But I wouldn’t call myself an enthusiastic cook.
WHAT RELATIONSHIP DO WE HAVE WITH DAD
We were always very close. We’re more like friends. (Jan: I dare to say that we are each other’s coaches and motivators. It’s been a long time since I was the only one advising in the role. How many times do I have to prove Lilla right. And she supported me incredibly during MasterChef.) Dad’s approach to the competition, in which he gave everything, is inspiring to me.
HOW WE ARE THE SAME
We are quite moody. (Jan: And also some brothels.) Well dad… I disagree. The brothel is a bro, I’m definitely not. (Jan: Okay, that’s another way. Let’s just say that neither of us is really attracted to ordinary activities like washing dishes.)
WHY I ENJOY SCHOOL
I couldn’t have chosen a better one. We have three weeks of online teaching, which suited me perfectly even during covid, and the fourth week we spend away from home and without internet on an expedition with a certain theme. We recently went on a theatrical expedition, which we ended with our performance. Thanks to this form of teaching, I have enough time to devote myself to other things.
MY GREATEST HOBBIES
I have been singing since I was three years old. When dad has breathing workshops on the Wim Hof method, I accompany them with lively singing. I even prefer dancing, specifically contemporary, fusion and street dance. I attend open lessons in Prague and teach younger children at my mother’s dance school. If I could one day devote myself to dancing, singing and educating children as a professional, I would be completely satisfied.
