Great expectations and subsequent criticism have descended on the current sci-fi series on Netflix called The Three-Body Problem. So far, the eight-part series is named after the first part of the book trilogy Remembrance of the Earth, which was written between 2007 and 2010 by the Chinese writer Liu Ch’-sin and published in the country by the publishing house Host.
The author caused a stir with his trilogy, won genre awards including the Hugo Award, and it was only a matter of time before his work became the model for a high-budget series.
After the Chinese version, which is said to faithfully stick to the book, including the author’s penchant for describing in detail the mathematical-physical problems posed, the version for Netflix was taken up by David Benioff and DB Weiss.
For better digestibility, the creators (who are entirely Chinese in the book) partially transferred the plot to a Western environment. A group of friends, brilliant scientists who have been together since their studies, thus acquired a cosmopolitan appearance. That won’t sit well with everyone who repeatedly criticizes Netflix for trying too hard to balance its cast.
