The warm weather lured cyclists and scooter riders out. The officers together with BESIP are therefore alerting them to what they need to get home safely.

Jindřich Machů, spokesperson of the MP Ostrava: “Cyclists and riders of scooters and electric scooters do not realize that they have the status of a road user and as such must follow the rules that are intended for traffic on roads. Of course, we will also check the mandatory equipment of both bicycles and e-scooters, and we will act as a preventive measure in terms of the use of bicycle helmets whether on bicycles or scooters, and at the same time, that riders on bicycles are properly lit and have reflective elements and are therefore well see.”

Pavel Blahut, BESIP regional coordinator for the Moravian-Silesian region: “Those older than 18 don’t always have a bicycle helmet. At the same time, a bicycle helmet is a basic protective element of a cyclist when moving in traffic. Basically, all those fatally injured, in two-thirds of the cases, were not wearing a helmet, so it’s something they can do for themselves.”

Traffic-preventive actions take place in places with a greater concentration of cyclists and at the same time pedestrians on shared cycle and pedestrian paths. For example, Hlavní třída is one such place in Ostrava-Porubá.

survey: cyclists and scooter riders: “I’m a doctor here from the university hospital, I go basically every day if the weather and safety permit. Basically, when I see those injuries in the hospital, I take care and am considerate of others. Did you miss any of the safety features? They said that the front reflector. I have the reflectors in my bikes and I think I have everything. I have a helmet too.”

“I don’t have a helmet, but the lighting works here, so it’s according to the rules.”

“I didn’t miss anything. I ride my bike often and like it. I got a hare.”

Lucie Baránková Vilamová (ANO), mayor of the Ostrava-Poruba MOB: “I’m glad that the city police is doing a whole series of preventive actions in Poruba, drawing attention to a whole series of problems that can happen in public spaces and everywhere, and I think it’s good that they teach the public how to behave at certain times. I think the most important thing is to be considerate. This is absolutely the alpha and omega for people to realize that they are not alone in the streets.”

As for mandatory equipment, lights and reflectors must not be missing on bicycles and scooters.

Pavel Blahut, BESIP regional coordinator for the Moravian-Silesian Region: “White reflector in front, red reflector in back. There are orange colors on the side in the spokes of the wheels. Another mandatory equipment is to have effective and functional brakes, two independently functioning brakes, of course avoid any sharp edges, broken levers, sharp screws, so that in the event of a fall, no further injuries may occur by causing the vehicle to fall. “

On the other hand, the bell is not part of the mandatory equipment, just like the chain cover and mudguards.
