After an exceptionally hot July and August, unusually warm weather continued in September, when significantly above-average air temperatures were again recorded in Olomouc. The highest temperature of 31.1 °C was even measured twice in September in Olomouc, on September 11 and 12, 2023. The average daily temperature in Olomouc for the whole of September was 18.9 °C, which is 4.6 °C more than the long-term average for this month.
This follows from the measurement results of the Olomouc MESSO Metropolitan Station Network, which has been providing basic meteorological data for the city of Olomouc and its surroundings since 2010. “The absolute September temperature maximum reaching 31.1 °C was recorded on September 11 at the Envelopa station and then on September 12 at the JUTA station in Holica. The average daily maximum, taking into account all measuring stations, reached a value of 25.6 °C. The unusually warm September is complemented by very high temperatures at the end of the month. On days 26-29 In September, summer days were recorded not only in Olomouc as a whole, but also at all MESSO stations, when the air temperature attacked even tropical values. The closest to it was at the Svatý Kopeček station on September 27. The daily maximum there then reached 29.0 °C,” stated Miroslav Vysoudil from the Department of Geography of the Faculty of Science, who has been responsible for the operation of MESSO since the beginning of the measurement.
According to the maximum daily temperature, there were 24 summer days in September this year, five of which were even tropical. “The fact that a continuous period with daily maximum summer or tropical temperature was recorded by the Envelopa station for 14 long days is definitely worth mentioning. Nine consecutive days with summer or tropical temperature then all other stations on days 5-13. September,” added Miroslav Vysoudil.
The absolute maximum daily temperature was always reached at the station Svatý Kopeček, Envelopa or JUTA Holice. According to average daily maximum temperatures, the hottest JUTA stations were Holice or Svatý Kopeček. In all criteria, the lowest values were at Hlubočky station and the garden of the Dominican monastery.
The Olomouc MESSO metropolitan station network has been providing basic meteorological data for the city of Olomouc and its surroundings since 2010. “The functioning of this network in the context of the current trend of global climate change, together with the specifics of the urban climate, is completely irreplaceable for research in the coming years. The nature of the measurements at the MESSO stations, i.e. at the local level, provides data on climate change at the level of a medium-sized city.” added Miroslav Vysoudil.
