On Sunday, Wellnerova Street, near the center of Olomouc, where a sturdy spruce grows, will be temporarily closed due to the cutting down and removal of the Christmas tree. Lumberjacks will start felling the coniferous tree at 08:00 and then transport it to Horní náměstí.
“Wellnerova Street will be closed from 11:00 a.m.,” Jana Doleželová from the town hall’s press department said on Friday.
From Wellnerova Street, the roughly 14-meter tall spruce will be transported on the back of a truck to the historic center of Olomouc via Hynaisova, Studentská, Zámečnická and Opletalova Streets. The representatives of the city will ceremonially light the Christmas tree on Horní náměstí on Sunday, November 19, when the Christmas markets will also open.
A spruce tree grew in front of the family house in Wellnerova Street. The owners offered the tree to the city due to the fact that its roots grow into the foundation of the house. In addition, the conifer is higher than the house, and in case of strong winds, its eventual fall could damage the property.
The town hall recently announced a poll in which children can propose a name for the Christmas tree. “On Monday, November 13, the deadline for the delivery of the design proposal for naming the tree will end. The chosen name will be given to the Christmas tree when it is lit on Sunday, November 19,” noted Doleželová.
The Olomouc Christmas markets take place every year mainly on Horní and Dolní náměstí, where there are wooden stalls with ceramics, Advent wreaths, Christmas ornaments and decorations, blacksmith, textile and wooden products, bee products and winter accessories. The Christmas markets also include concerts and film screenings. Tens of thousands of people visit Christmas markets every year.
At the end of this year, after a three-year break, there will be a mobile public ice rink in the center of Olomouc again. People skate on the ice rink in the area of the city market in the neighborhood of the Ferris wheel and stands with Christmas goods.
