At the end of September, almost 4.2 million citizens in EU countries had refugee status with temporary protection, most of them people who fled Ukraine as a result of the Russian invasion. In which country did most refugees find protection? Is the Czech Republic still at the top of the number of refugees with temporary protection?

Eurostat released data on the number of refugees with temporary protection for September 2023. Almost 4.2 million citizens from Ukraine inhabited the European Union countries.

The largest number of refugees with temporary protection were in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic

The main EU countries receiving beneficiaries of temporary protection from Ukraine are Germany (1,194,900 persons, 28.3% of the total), Poland (958,655 persons, 23.1%) and the Czech Republic (357,960 persons, 8.8%). ).

The largest increase in refugees with temporary protection occurred in Germany, the Netherlands and Ireland

Compared to the end of August 2023, the number of beneficiaries of temporary protection from Ukraine in the EU increased slightly, by 31,920 (+0.8%).

The largest absolute increase of Ukrainian refugees was recorded in Germany (19,205 persons, +1.6%), the Netherlands (3,685 persons, +2.8%) and Ireland (2,875 persons, 3.2%).

The number of refugees with temporary protection decreased the most in the Czech Republic, France and Poland

In five EU countries, there was a month-on-month decrease in the number of persons under temporary protection.

The largest number of refugees with temporary protection decreased in the Czech Republic (7,125 persons, -2%), France (2,155 persons, -3.2%), Poland (1,895 persons, -0.2%), Slovenia (405 persons, -4.6%) and Luxembourg (10 persons, -0.2%).

The Czech Republic hosts the most refugees with temporary protection per person

Compared to the population of individual EU countries, the highest number of total beneficiaries of temporary protection was per thousand inhabitantsl in the Czech Republic (33.1), Estonia (26.2), Poland (26.1), Bulgaria (25.8) and Lithuania. (25.5), while the corresponding figure at EU level was 9.3 refugees per thousand inhabitants.

The majority of refugees in the EU are women and children

On September 30, 2023 citizens of Ukraine represented more than 98% of persons enjoying temporary protection. Adult women made up almost half (46.5%) of beneficiaries of temporary protection in the EU. Children made up a little more than one-third (33.7%), while male adults made up less than a fifth (19.9%) of the total.
