The maneuver, which police officers in the Czech Republic have probably never seen before, took place on the highway near Pardubice. The woman stopped on it, turned in the opposite direction and drove ten kilometers at full speed. The police found out that it was an 81-year-old senior woman. Experts want more brands, communications managers want more careful health checks.
At first everything seemed fine. As an example, the driver drove in the connecting lane. But suddenly she stopped and her car turned into an unlocked weapon. And she certainly wasn’t going slow. She was going as fast as cars in the right direction.
At one point, the woman passed the truck. Minutes ticked by and countless desperate drivers called the police. “The woman drove approximately 10 kilometers in the opposite direction,” said Pardubice police spokeswoman Dita Holečková.
The patrol managed to get the car off the highway without any accidents. An eighty-one-year-old senior woman was behind the wheel. “Our population is aging unimaginably. There will be an ever-increasing possibility that someone will go somewhere wrong,” warned the spokesman of the Central Automobile Club of the Czech Republic, Igor Sirota.
The woman is said to have disappeared. “The real main prevention should be carried out in the offices of general practitioners who assess the ability to drive,” wondered Jan Rýdl, spokesman for the Directorate of Roads and Highways.
From the age of 68, such an examination is mandatory once every two years. However, the woman presented the police with a valid medical certificate.
Experts are debating how to prevent similar situations. Some want more signs to give drivers even more confidence that they are driving the right way. All entrances and exits should be marked as much as possible. “If the signs were overgrown, there would be a risk that drivers would stop noticing the signs,” pointed out Rýdl.
Gambling thus increases. Between Pardubice and Hradec Králové alone, two such drivers drove within the space of just a few days. Such an event happens on average once a day. If it already happens, the procedure is as follows.
The driver must immediately pull over to the side of the parking lane, turn on all lights and release the blinker. Then he puts on his vest. He climbs over the guardrail and continues through the ditch with a triangle. He still has to call the police emergency line on the way.
If he does not kill himself or someone else, such a driver must count on a fine of ten thousand and the loss of his driver’s license. This is also the case with the elderly woman who was driving in the opposite direction.
