The City Hall of Prague 6 has chosen a drastic course of action against widespread parking on sidewalks, which has not been punished for a long time. Many pedestrians complain about blocked streets.
The municipality allocated 400,000 crowns in the budget to prevent parking where it is not allowed.
Granite blocks making it impossible to park cars have recently appeared in Československé armády street in Bubenč. More barriers will follow. “In this case, granite blocks were chosen, but the placement of solid metal posts is also considered,” says Prague 6 transport councilor Ondřej Matěj Hrubeš.

According to him, cars parked on the sidewalk not only obstruct pedestrians, but also destroy the surface of the sidewalk itself, which is not designed for this load-bearing capacity.
“The pedestrian comes first. Therefore, during this year we will gradually install additional bollards and we also ask citizens to report to us places where there are long-term problems with illegal parking on sidewalks“, says Hrubeš.
Other fixed obstacles are already placed, for example, on the outer circuit of Vítězné náměstí, in Svatovítská, Ve Struhách, Wolkerova and Papírenská streets. In addition to the public, the city hall’s department of transport and the environment and the city police will be involved in the selection of other places.
