The Czech Republic is pressuring the EU for ammunition for Ukraine. He also wants to buy it outside the member states

--

The Czech Republic wants the European Union to buy ammunition for Ukraine outside the EU member states as well. With reference to diplomatic sources, the Brussels server Politico reported about it. Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský confirmed these Czech efforts on Saturday. He stated that the Czech Republic raised this topic in Brussels because it is concerned with the result, which should be for Ukraine to have enough ammunition and be able to defend itself against Russian aggression.

Last year, the European Union promised Ukraine that it would deliver one million pieces of artillery ammunition by the end of March this year, but so far it has delivered only about 330,000 pieces. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell recently said he expects the figure to rise by around 200,000 by March, bringing the union to around 52 percent of its target. According to him, the EU will provide the Ukrainians with a million rounds of ammunition by the end of the year.

France, which is the EU’s leader in the defense industry, has always sought to ensure that ammunition supplies come from local sources, the website Politico wrote. However, the Union armaments do not even have time to produce such a large quantity, which is why the Czechs came up with a proposal that the EU should also look beyond its borders for artillery ammunition.

The Czech foreign minister “finds it very logical” that ammunition should be available outside the European Union. Lipavský said this on Saturday in Brussels, where he is participating in an informal meeting of heads of EU diplomacy. “We will see how successful we are in our endeavor,” he added. Now it is up to the other EU states to support this proposal. According to Politico, the Czech Republic would like to turn to arms companies in, for example, South Korea, Turkey or the Republic of South Africa.
