Teplice – Gallery Zahradní dům in Teplice was filled with pictures by Jan Saudek. In addition to the famous photograph of the torso of a man with a child on his chest (Život, 1966), visitors can also view famous nudes. Exhibition curator Vladimír Šavel told ČTK today. The name of the installation Eighty plus one refers not only to last year’s exhibition in Prostějov, but also to the author’s age. Saudek will be 89 years old in May.
“There are things that are sickly familiar, but also things that are a bit newer,” Šavel said about the selection of images. He pointed out that Saudek personally participated in the installation of his pictures in the gallery and participated in their selection. But the artist’s wife, Pavlína Saudková, is behind the selection of works that the public could see for the first time today at the opening, said the curator. “The city also published a small catalog of his work,” said Šavel. He added that catalogs with a selection of the author’s works do not appear very often.
Saudek is one of the most famous domestic photographers who have become famous in the world as well. He has won many awards and is a holder of the French Legion of Honor, among others. The gallery approached the photographer with the idea of exhibiting a cross-section of Saudka’s work in Teplice. “He then expressed an interest in exhibiting, so I would say it was mutual,” said the curator, who was surprised that Saudek did not want the premises modified for his exhibition. “The master was satisfied with how it is divided and how it looks,” added Šavel. The exhibition will be open to the public until June 22.
As one of the most important Czech photographers of the second half of the 20th century, Jan Saudek became famous for his typical handwriting of colored photographs and his desire to depict primarily the female body, women as such and the relationship between a man and a woman.
