In mid-May, Tachov will begin the complete renovation of the central Republic Square for 82 million crowns without VAT. The city of 13,000 people plans to open the revitalized area to locals and visitors next summer. The square will undergo fundamental improvements after about half a century, said mayor Petr Vrána (Volím Tachov).
Among the six applicants, the construction company Gardenline s.r.o. from Litoměřice won, which, according to Vrány, has very good references. “The last event of hers, which they realized, happens to be Tachovské náměstí in Prague,” he said Petr Vrana. The construction work will be followed by another company with a green project developed by a landscape architect. According to deputy mayor Jan Straka (For a better Tachov), the city has 77 million crowns in this year’s budget for the modification of a large area, including the restoration of the Marian Column and the connection to adjacent streets.
According to Vrány, everything will be new on the square, including utility networks. “The raised pedestrian zone will disappear and the square will have a more compact surface. The majority of the area will be covered by classic paving, except for the most common walking directions made of large-area stones.” he said. A replica of the Marian Column, which was destroyed in the early 1970s, will return to its original location. New sculptures will decorate its surroundings.
“We will keep the number of trees on the north and east sides, and they will increase in the lower part. But the species composition will change,” said the Crow. The square will have parking spaces and two larger bays for short-term parking.
The concept of the reconstruction of the wide city center, the urban heritage zone, began to be born in 2000. The reconstruction of Hradební and Kostelní Streets, Krvavé Uličky is complete, now it will continue through the square and will be connected to it by KH Borovského, Rokycanova and Vodní Streets, which are being designed.
Money in the reserve fund
“We have to complete the construction by the summer of 2025, because shutting down the square for one year means a big complication with regard to traffic in the center and, for example, city celebrations,” said the mayor. Tachov has the money saved in a reserve fund, he will not take out a loan. “And in addition, we have already received back the 60 million crowns of the subsidy that we received for the reconstruction of the riding hall in Světce,” he stated. According to him, there are no subsidy titles for the reconstruction of the square area, the city will try to get support for the restoration of the Marian column.
