Prague, May 13, 2024 (PROTEXT) – The Maker Faire festival of modern DIYers, innovators and creators was held in Prague over the weekend. The main aim was to present different aspects of construction, from traditional crafts to modern technologies, while showing how construction is connected to our daily lives and creates the world around us. Together we managed to prepare a program including 7 workshops and lectures.

Building is fun for everyone and can appeal across generations

How to design a house?

One of the main elements of the program were interactive and educational workshops that focused on practical skills in the field of construction.

Among the most interesting was the workshop “House for everyone” from the publishing house PIPASIK, which, based on the principles of modular construction, enabled children to design and build their own houses. The children learned the basics of designing, they had to think about how many people would live in the house and how many floors they would build. They worked with the floor plan and only after all the rooms had been sorted out and building permits had been processed, they could build their houses. Builder Matouš Fejfar ze helped to experience the design Design schools and the entire workshop was conducted by the authors of the workshop, architects Zuzana Šuleková and Jitka Musilová, and they add: “We are very happy that not only children but also their parents participated in the workshop and were able to experience the creation process together”.

“The workshop participants experienced what it’s like to be an architect and designer for a day. What else to start than with your own house design. Thanks to this experience, they experienced that there is a thought behind every centimeter of the design. The goal of experiencing and bringing the students closer to practice was definitely successful.” Matouš Fejfar, director of the Design School.

Czech students are building a school in Zambia

Another interesting activity was the production of adobe bricks, which was presented as part of the project “We are building a school in Zambia”. The students of FSv CTU presented an innovative approach to the production of bricks, which combines traditional procedures with modern technologies. These bricks are stabilized with cement and offer greater strength and resistance to weathering and termites. Brickmakers from HELUZwhich is the only one in the Czech Republic that produces adobe bricks.

Exhibition of competitive designs of the construction hackathon Affordable housing

At the NCS 4.0 booth, we displayed all 6 affordable housing designs from the university teams that competed in the construction hackathon in April this year. For Team FSv CTU student Rebeka Uhlárová presented the concept. This team won an award from the Ministry of Regional Development for the Affordable Housing Concept.

How is the roof built?

The Association of Entrepreneurs in the Construction Industry organized a workshop We are building a gable roof as part of the Maker Faire. During it, the children tried out the work of a carpenter and a tinsmith under the guidance of professional crafts mentor Michal Baláž. “Construction was part of Maker Faire for the first time last year, and I’m glad that we were able to show examples of our industry again this year. We had another success with the workshop. The children enjoyed working with wood and tools that are used by professionals and that they do not normally have access to.” says Jiří Nouza, president of the Association of Entrepreneurs in the Construction Industry, adding: “Our Union is trying to support long-term interest in working in the construction industry. It is an attractive and promising field that brings wide application possibilities in the future.”

Is it hard to control the excavator?

You need at least a little skill, attention and a dose of concentration. Visitors could test whether they could do it on the company’s training simulator STRABAG. Part of the workshop was an activity for smaller children – building blocks made of straws – where the children could also test their skills and imagination.

Build your bridge

With the Association for Road Construction, the children built “Merry Bridges”, models of bridge structures that imitate real bridges. They could choose from 14 models of different types of bridge constructions, which faithfully imitate real bridges, including their basic static effects.

“The construction of transport infrastructure has gained a lot of momentum in recent years. We are happy to bring our work closer to young people,” said Ing. Petr Svoboda, managing director Road Construction Association.

Together, we managed to provide visitors with an inspiring experience, but also to support and develop interest in construction fields and technologies in the Czech Republic.

“Maker Faire was not only about entertainment, but also about education and innovation in the construction industry. We are pleased to have been able to present a wide range of activities and promote interest in the field of construction,” said Radoslav Sovják, director of the National Center for Construction 4.0
