Prague – The Czechia and Germany have finalized the legal and technical details of the donation of 15 German Leopard tanks to the Czech army. The contract will now be reviewed by ministers and subsequently signed. At the same time, the first tanks are modified in Germany to meet the needs of Czech soldiers. Ministry of Defense spokeswoman Natálie Forsterová told ČTK.

According to an earlier statement by the Czech Ministry of Defense, Germany appreciates with the gift how intensively the Czech Republic supports Ukraine with military material. According to available information, the Czechia also sent T-72 tanks and other heavy combat equipment to the country attacked by Russia.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala (ODS) agreed with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on German assistance in replacing equipment donated to Ukraine at the beginning of May. Defense Minister Jana Černochová (ODS) announced in May that Germany will donate 15 older Leopard 2A4 tanks to the Czech Republic. At the same time, both countries will start negotiations on the purchase of up to 50 more state-of-the-art Leopard tanks version 2A7+ of various modifications, which the Czechia would acquire in the coming years. The ministry announced that the necessary contract for the donation of German tanks will be concluded in the summer, and the Czech army could take over the first machines before the end of the year.

“At the moment, nothing stands in the way of the gift of the German Federal Republic of the Czech Republic in the form of 15 Leopard tanks. The legal and technical details have been resolved,” said Forsterová. After discussing the contracts at the government, their signature will follow. “At the same time, the first tanks are already being modified in Germany to meet the needs of the Army of the Czech Republic and to ensure the compatibility of communication and information systems in particular,” she added. The army could receive the first pieces this year.
