In the Czech Republic, the number of cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants decreased last year. Olomouc lost the status of a city of one hundred thousand. After the most populous Prague, the most people live in Brno, Ostrava, Pilsen and Liberec. Fewer than 100,000 people already live in other cities. At the end of last year, the Czechia had 608 cities. Štěpánov in Olomouc, which received this status in 2020, ranks among them for the shortest time.

At the end of last year, there were 1.28 million inhabitants in Prague, 379 thousand in Brno, 280 thousand in Ostrava, 169 thousand in Pilsen and 103 thousand in Liberec. “Compared to the situation in 2020, Olomouc fell out of this group, with 504 inhabitants missing the given limit,” said statisticians from the Czech Statistical Office.

On the contrary, Přebuz in Sokolovsk was the smallest town in terms of population at the end of last year with 77 inhabitants. It is followed by Loučná pod Klínovcem in the Chomutovsk region, where 135 people lived last year, and Boží Dar in the Karlovy Vary region with 227 inhabitants. There were 33 cities in the Czech Republic with less than a thousand inhabitants.

“Prague is the city with the highest overall increase in population, with 15,993 people added in 2021 alone,” noted Jan Bílík from the Department of Demographic Statistics of the Czech Statistical Office. “However, if we were to recalculate the total increase in the number of inhabitants, the city of Přebuz recorded the biggest increase last year. Here, six new inhabitants meant a population increase of almost eight percent in relative terms,” he added.

Last year Ostrava recorded the highest total population decrease, a decrease of 2,474, followed by Janská Lázně in relation to the population size. According to statistics, the population there decreased by 3.6 percent, in absolute terms it was 24 people.

At the end of last year, 10.516 million people lived in the Czech Republic.
