EuroBasket 2022 | Czechia – Poland 84:99, the first defeat for the Czech team at the EC

Czech basketball players entered the European Championship at home in Prague’s O2 arena by defeating Poland 84:99. Exactly two weeks after an ankle injury on his right leg, point guard Tomáš Satoranský was also included in the lineup, who played over 17 minutes, did not score and had six assists. The next match in the basic group D awaits coach Ronen Ginzburg’s men on Saturday from 17:30 against Serbia.

The best scorer of the Czech team was Jan Veselý with 17 points in front of 10,992 spectators. Mateusz Ponitka contributed to Poland’s victory with 26 points and nine assists. AJ Slaughter added 23 points.

Satoranský was injured at the tournament in Hamburg, and after Wednesday’s individual test, he managed the last evening pre-game training with the team on Thursday. Nevertheless, the team leader was included in the starting line-up against Poland.

In the beginning, Martin Kříž responded to the baskets of captain Mateusz Ponitka and Aleksander Balcerowski by equalizing the score twice, and after the Poles’ five-point streak, captain Vojtěch Hruban reduced the score with a three-pointer, but the opponent immediately escaped to a blockbuster 20:7, mainly thanks to Ponitka, who scored in six minutes and 15 seconds 12 points and two assists. Vít Krejčí interrupted the Poles’ 11:0 run with a three-pointer, but the Czechs subsequently repeatedly lost the game by 13 points.

The last time was at the start of the second quarter, when the Czechs started to pull back thanks to Ondřej Balvín’s smash and Ondřej Sehnal’s triple. With a ten-point streak, which was topped off with a three-pointer by Jaromír Bohačík, they reduced the lead to 35:36. In the 18th minute, after Tomáš Kyzlink’s penetration, the Czechs led 41:40 for the first time. Slaughter answered from a distance, after the beautiful interplay of Satoranský with Kyzlink and the scoring Patrik Auda and three converted free throws by Hruban, it was 46:43 again, but it was a tie at the main break.

The Poles again entered the second half better and thanks to five points by Slaughter and a basket by Balcerowski, they escaped with a difference of seven points. The opponent was always able to respond to the reaction of the home team and, on the contrary, Michal Sokolowski increased the score to 64:55. Krejčí responded with a three-pointer and an assist to Auda. But after a basket with a converted free throw by Jakub Schenk and a penalty for Ondřej Sehnal’s loss by Aaron Cel, it was nine points again.

Sehnal responded with a three-pointer and at the beginning of the last quarter, Hruban had an accurate fly, but the Poles again took the lead by eight points. Thanks to Peterko’s three-pointer, Bohačík’s converted six-pointer and Kyzlinka’s basket, the Czechs reduced the score to 76:78, but the opponent kept the lead mainly thanks to the scorers Ponitek and Slaughet and dominated the end.
