The Czechs played the semi-finals of a major tournament for the first time in history, but they had no chance against the Americans and lost 1:10. However, on Sunday from 15:00 they can attack for a great bronze. The loser of the Canada-Switzerland battle will stand in their way.
It was only the second time that these units met against each other. For the first time this year at the Olympics in Beijing, where the American women won 4:1, and now half a year later, the Czechs challenged the eleven-time world champions in the semi-finals of the World Cup in Denmark.
Even before the match, the favorite was clear, the overseas players showed their level in the first period.
First, in the 8th minute, Taylor Heise got through with a great shotThe Czechs then went into a two-on-one outnumbering, but could not finish accurately.
And then Hayley Scamurra scored and then Amanda Kessel – 3-0.
Not even a timeout helped Carly MacLeod’s players, Hilary Knight made it 4-0 after a run.
The women’s national team then scored, but the goal was disallowed, the referee probably stopped the game before the goal was scored. The American women were effective and until the end of the first period, Knight and Carpenter were still on fire – 6:0.
Blanka Škodová stepped in for Klára Peslarová in the second period, but she also capitulated later, the dominant Amanda Kessel shot briskly to the bullpen.
Then came the Czech joy.
Even though the Czech players failed to use the power play, they continued to press and after the scrum Klára Hymlárová was the most emphatic – 7:1. A few seconds later, however, the overseas team answered, and Amanda Kessel came through again, completing the hat trick.
In the third period, the favorite of the entire tournament added two more hits, courtesy of Caroline Harvey and Taylor Heis.
However, the Czech women’s ice hockey players still have a chance for a medal, for the first time in history they will fight for third place in the Women’s World Championship.
