Hundreds of Ukrainians marched through Prague to thank the Czech Republic for its support

“Thank you, Czechia and Czechs! With love and respect, Ukraine and Ukrainians,” wrote the Ukrainian embassy on its Twitter account, which shared pictures from the event.

Ukraine has been facing Russian aggression since the end of February, before which several hundred thousand inhabitants of the attacked country fled to the Czech Republic.

The participants of the march gathered around noon under the statue of St. Wenceslas. After the opening speech and chanting “Thank you!”, they set off towards Můstek and Old Town Square.

The participants, among whom there was a significant preponderance of women, carried Czech and Ukrainian flags, as well as a hand-made banner thanking them for the warm welcome in the Czech Republic. “Thank you,” read a misspelled sign carried at the front of the procession.

The exact number of Ukrainian refugees residing in the Czech Republic is not known. At the end of August, half a year after the beginning of the Russian invasion, the Minister of the Interior Vít Rakušan (STAN) estimated their number at more than 300,000. 424,302 Ukrainian refugees have received temporary protection visas so far.

According to the organizers of the largest domestic fundraisers, people from the Czech Republic have sent more than four billion crowns in support of Ukraine in half a year since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24, and they continue to contribute. The money is used to help victims of war and refugees, as well as to buy weapons for the Ukrainian army.

The Czech Republic provided Ukraine with 3.8 billion crowns worth of military equipment during the half-year war.
