“Since the beginning of the year, we have prevented 154,102 migrants from entering Greece illegally,” Mitarakis said on Sunday. Greece has been repeatedly criticized by non-governmental organizations for illegally driving migrants back to Turkey at the land and sea borders. On Sunday, Mitarakis again rejected these accusations and again stated that instead of preventing illegal crossings from Turkey to Greece, Turkey supports them.

Border control is one of the main priorities of the conservative Greek government, which came to power in 2019 and is seeking re-election next year. Last month, the government announced that it would extend the land border fence with Turkey along its entire length and increase the number of guards and electronic security there.

On the land border between Greece and Turkey, which is about 200 kilometers long, the Greek government already built a fence of almost 40 kilometers a few years ago. He is now planning to build a fence for another 80 kilometers and in the longer term plans to extend the barrier along the entire length of the land border.

According to the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), 3,700 migrants crossed the land border from Turkey to Greece this year, compared to 4,830 refugees for the whole of last year. More migrants arrived across the sea to the Greek islands in the Aegean this year than in the whole of last year – 4,730 arrived this year, last year there were 4,330 refugees from January to the end of the year, according to the UNHCR.
