After initial tests in the United States, Canada and Germany, the new function, called Ecological Routes in the Czech Republic, is being rolled out to dozens of other European countries. At the same time, Google is not the first to offer such an option in navigation. You could find it, for example, at Garmin or TomTom.

Initially, the offer will only be available to some users, who will be able to choose the most economical route in addition to the route without tolls, highways and ferries. The menu is hidden under Route Options.

“The route is often the same as the fastest route,” said Rubén Lozano-Aguilera, who holds the position of Google Maps senior product manager, in an interview with the media. This usually applies to traveling around the city.

The search algorithm takes into account a number of factors that are common to cover the distance to the destination as quickly as possible. But he also works with others.

“Artificial intelligence identifies all relevant routes from point A to point B and calculates fuel consumption for each one based on historical and real-world traffic patterns, road grade and type, and other data. Thanks to this, it is able to find the most economical and fastest route to the destination in a fraction of a second,” explains Iva Fialová, the spokesperson for Google in the Czech Republic.

Among other factors that the algorithm can deal with is the type of drive that the user can enter as part of the new function. You can choose between a gasoline, diesel or hybrid or purely electric engine. This will change the route significantly. Where the electric drive does not have a major problem with jumping in queues and between traffic lights, the owner of the internal combustion engine must expect higher consumption.

In the future, the inclusion of other factors, such as the weather, is also being considered. It also follows that the function called Ecological routes is not perfect. And actually it never will be, much like the navigation itself. No one can predict all the changes and conditions on the selected route in advance, although machine learning tries to improve based on mistakes. That is why Google also trained this system on roads in Europe.

The company is officially launching the service this Wednesday, but only to a limited number of users. It will expand gradually.
