Tábor – Czech women’s volleyball players are still 100% in the qualification for the 2023 European Championship. After Sunday’s win in Montenegro, they already had a certain participation in the final tournament, but they did not stop and today in Tábor they easily beat Finland 3:0 after sets of 25:19, 25:18 and 25:21.
Greek coach Jannis Athanasopulos didn’t take any chances and for the last home match in qualifying group B, he deployed a proven basic line-up in Czech colors. Only Veronika Dostálová started at libero instead of Daniela Digrinová. In the beginning, the Finns troubled the Czech attackers with a good defense at the net and led 14:11. But that was all from their side. The home players made a collective effort to win 18:16 and finish the first set.
In the second set, the Finns could not keep up with the fast Czech combinations and the home team jumped to 13:7. Rivals came close to them, but the endgame belonged to the Czech team again. He continued his superb performance in the third set as well.
Coach Athanasopulos appreciated how the Czech volleyball players managed the demanding program. “After the win in Montenegro, we didn’t sleep and traveled until the next afternoon. We didn’t have enough rest, so it’s very difficult to get the girls to focus on the next game. Especially when we already know that we have qualified. But the girls did it, they were very focused from the first point, even though the Finns played a really good match,” he said in a press release.
The match had a stormy atmosphere thanks to a thousand spectators, among whom there was a large number of supporters of the visiting team. “Because the Finns had fans here, something could always be heard and the atmosphere was loud. The Finns came from basketball, because they are playing the European Championship in Prague, and they added to the atmosphere of the match,” praised 19-year-old blocker Ela Koulisiani.
While the Finnish basketball players defeated the Czechia 98:88 on Tuesday, the women’s revenge came under the high net. “It’s an important win that we value very much. The Finns didn’t give it to us for free, they put pressure on the serve and in the defense, so it was really difficult,” added Koulisiani, who did well especially in the second set and scored a total of six points. The most productive player of the match was the scorer Michaela Mlejnková with nineteen points.
After five qualifying duels, the leading Czechia has a full 15 points and a single lost set. In the end, Iceland awaits him on Sunday, which is an outsider in Group B.
