It is quite a nice and quiet street in Ústí nad Labem – Štrekov. But when you walk through it, it’s as if everything falls on you. Perhaps this is caused by the knowledge that two days ago a policeman here had to shoot an assailant with a knife who threatened his family. Perhaps it is simply the dry and rainy autumn weather and the golden leaves, nostalgically falling from the trees. In any case, the public prosecutor’s office is now watching over the investigation and it is being led by criminal investigators with the police inspectorate.
The scene of Wednesday evening’s shooting is tense. The locals don’t want to talk about the disaster and don’t really know anything about it. The young man seemed withdrawn and quiet.

It is also not easy to meet a living soul in Tolstoy. With the possible exception of road repair workers and one or two local senior citizens. None of those who knew the family, and especially the attacker, wanted to talk much about the incident. They find it unbelievable that a young man of barely 20 years of age, whom they had known for years as quiet and reserved, who always greeted them politely and did not behave in any arrogant way, died in the hospital as a result of a gunshot wound.

“It happened over there, in that yellow villa. It’s horrible, I still can’t believe it. After all, he looked so quiet and withdrawn. How could he pick up a knife and… We actually don’t know anything at all. That they might have some problems with him? Don’t be angry, but I really don’t know anything,” sighed an elderly lady who lives basically just a few steps away. She didn’t want to introduce herself. “Don’t be angry, but you will understand,” she refused.
The other residents of this corner of the relatively long Strěkovské Street near ZŠ Karel IV spoke similarly.

Why did the police intervention turn out tragically? At first, the young man was supposed to threaten members of his family with a hunting shutter. It is said that there is a certain possibility that he was under the influence of some toxic substance. When the patrol arrived at the scene, the young man did not react and immediately attacked. The police officer was allegedly forced to use his service weapon. Although the young man was seriously injured, it is said that it is not yet certain whether he actually died as a result of the shooting.
“The patient died after being taken to hospital despite all efforts to revive him. We cannot provide more details,” said Jana Mrákotová, spokeswoman for Masaryk Hospital in Ústí.

Even the Ústí police did not shed light on the causes of the accident. In addition, the public prosecutor reserved the right to inform the public. The investigation will take several months. Only then, when the case is closed, along with an investigation into whether the police officer used the weapon legitimately and justifiably, will the public learn the resolution, it is said.
According to the Ústí prosecutor Dan Anděl, there is definitely no further danger. The regional prosecutor’s office now oversees compliance with the law in the preliminary proceedings in both so-called criminal cases. “On the one hand, the attack on a police officer by a civilian during an official intervention, which is being investigated by the criminal service of the Regional Police Directorate, on the other hand, the General Inspectorate of the Security Forces is investigating whether the use of the service weapon by the police officer was appropriate,” he added.
