One case of African swine fever was confirmed in the Liberec Region on Thursday. This was announced by the Minister of Agriculture Zdeněk Nekula (KDU-ČSL).

The infection was confirmed in a dead piglet of a wild pig, which was found in Jindřichovice pod Smrkek in the Frýdlant region.

“In cooperation with the State Veterinary Administration, we are solving the situation and taking all the necessary measures. We have working mechanisms for these cases, everything runs as standard,” said Minister of Agriculture Zdeněk Nekula on Twitter.

“A so-called zone of infection will be defined around the place where the infected pig was found, covering an area of approximately 200 square kilometers. Hunting of wild pigs will be temporarily prohibited in this area, the movement of the population in the wild will be restricted and monitoring of the occurrence of the disease in wild pigs will be intensified,” said the spokesperson of the Veterinary Administration Petr Vorlíček with in that the measures will also affect domestic pig breeders and operators of slaughterhouses or game plants in the vicinity.

The Ministry of Agriculture will release further details on Friday. The disease is not transmissible to humans or other animals, it only spreads between wild and domestic pigs.
