When the news was picked up by the Ukrainian media, after about two hours it was confirmed by the army’s strategic communication center and Viktor Mykyta, head of the administration of the Transcarpathian region, where the soldiers from the 128th brigade come from.
The military said the Russians attacked the 128th Independent Mountain Assault Brigade based in Mukachevo with an Iskander-M missile. Without specifying specific numbers, it reported that soldiers had lost their lives and that local residents had suffered various serious injuries.
On Saturday evening, Defense Minister Umerov offered his condolences to the survivors of the killed soldiers. “All the circumstances of what happened will be explained,” he said, according to Ukrainian Truth, adding that he had ordered the main inspectorate of the Ministry of Defense to investigate the accident.
The portal RBK Ukraine writes on Sunday that the leadership of the Zaporozhye Region has declared mourning in this region for Monday. Flags will be lowered to half-mast, there will be a minute of silence in the morning and services for deceased soldiers will be held in churches of various denominations.
