Ukrainian drones attacked two Russian regions, Belgorod and Volgograd, at night, Ukrainian news agency Unian reported, without initially mentioning that they were Ukrainian drones. She later said that two, not army drones, but SBU secret service drones were attacking. The attack hit the Lukoil oil refinery in Zakanalje, Volgograd region, the Volgograd region branch of Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations and the local governor confirmed. The Russians also attacked Ukraine with their drones at night.
As a result of the fall of the drone on the territory of the largest producer of petroleum products in the Southern Federal District of the Russian Federation, an explosion occurred. The fire spread to 300 square meters, and the relevant departments extinguished it on the spot for several hours.
“Tonight, air defense and electronic warfare units repelled a UAV (drones) attack on the territory of the Volgograd region in the Kalachevsk district. As a result of the downed UAV falling, a fire broke out in the Volgograd oil refinery,” wrote Governor Andrey Bocharov. According to him, the fire was immediately contained and there were no casualties. However, the TASS agency reported that the fire was extinguished at eight o’clock local time, the attack took place around four o’clock in the morning.
As the Unian agency later specified, drones of the Ukrainian secret service SBU attacked the refinery. Two drones hit primary oil refining facilities, without which the plant would lose a significant portion of its production capacity. “The SBU continues to systematically destroy the infrastructure that Russia is using to wage war in Ukraine,” the source told the agency, adding that the attacks would continue.
The Lukoil-Volgogradnaftoperobka plant is one of the largest refineries in Russia. Its production capacity is 14.8 million tons. Since 1993, it has been a 100% subsidiary of Lukoil.
As CTK reported, according to AFP, Ukraine shot down nine of 14 attacking Russian drones at night. According to the DPA agency, the Russian Ministry of Defense said it had shot down seven enemy drones. Ukraine was attacked at night by 14 drones and two Ovod (NATO codename Kingbolt) missiles. As in the previous night, the attacks were aimed primarily at energy supply facilities in the industrial area around the city of Dnipro.
