Bill Murray: I never invite friends who are better than me to a match

In it, the Spengler family returns to where it all began, the legendary fire station in New York, where its new members join forces with the original Ghostbusters to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age.

“I’m excited about the next installment of the fantastic film we made a long time ago in New York. We met again in the fight sequence where we are all in jumpsuits. It was fun and it’s still fun,” said Bill Murray, who plays Dr. Peter Venkman in all five films.

Praising the comedy, he then continued, “I’m happy to be a part of this franchise. I think the fans will like the sequel. It has a beautiful, honest story, there are also a few scary moments, and most importantly, we passed the torch to young people. Ghostbusters: Realms of Ice unites two generations of heroes.”

He then met with original co-stars Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson at the film’s New York premiere on March 15 to support the new stars.

A clown and a screamer

Bill Murray was born in the suburbs of Chicago, one of nine children in an Irish Catholic family to mother Lucille, a postal clerk, and father Edward, a lumber salesman. According to oldest brother Brian, little Bill was showing off to get his parents’ attention. He had a unique sense of humor that could reliably make the family laugh.

But he did not like the boys’ Jesuit school. “They taught us things I already knew. I was bored and ignored the teacher. I was a loudmouth and a bit of a clown. I kept getting in trouble for my jokes,” Murray recalls on Apple TV+.

When Bill was seventeen, his father died. To improve his and his family’s financial situation, he started earning money by picking up balls on the golf course, falling in love with the sport. He then started attending Regis University in Denver.

Golf start

He soon left school and returned to Chicago, where his older brother Brian introduced him to the improvisational comedy group The Second City. In January 1977, Bill Murray became a member of the American night television show Saturday Night Live, where he demonstrated his comedic talent and distinctive style with great success.

The breakthrough role came in 1980 in the sports comedy Caddyshack from the environment of his favorite golf. His popularity grew with other memorable performances in the aforementioned sci-fi comedy Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters 2 (1989).

He subsequently had great success with the romantic comedy Na Hromnice o den more (1993) and with dozens of other films that he continues to make every year. As far as golf is concerned, Bill is one of the famous players and has already earned millions of dollars for charity through his tournaments. But he sticks to the following statement: “I will never invite friends who are better than me to a match. It’s my tournament and I want to win it.”

Friendship with Anderson

“There is one particular dramatic role I cherish in my career so far, it’s unlike any of my comedic performances, yet it’s one of my favourites. It came in 2003, when novice director Sofia Coppola cast me in the romantic drama Lost in Translation,” repeated Bill Murray, who received his only Oscar nomination for the role, in many interviews.

The film, about a lonely, not-so-successful actor living in a studio in vibrant but withdrawn Tokyo, was a huge success. Sofia also fondly remembers him. “I was going through a difficult time when writing the script and drew on my own loneliness and time spent in Japan. Right from the beginning, I wished it was Bill who would take me and the audience back to Tokyo. He is still my favorite actor to this day.”

Bill Murray has established a remarkable creative partnership with filmmaker Wes Anderson. He starred in nine of his films, including Such a Strange Family, Fantastic Mr. Fox or Grandhotel Budapest.

“Bill was very supportive from the very beginning, he became part of my family,” says Wes Anderson. She is also to play in his next film. But the filmmaker was cautious about revealing details: “I can’t tell you much more than that the film will be about espionage, a father-daughter relationship, and that it will have a somewhat dark tone.”

As a TV weather presenter in the successful comedy Na Hromnice a day more.

American filmmaker Theodore Melfi, who already cast him in the comedy-drama Love Your Neighbor (2014), is preparing another film with Bill Murray. The upcoming film The Friend is an adaptation of the award-winning book bestseller by Sigrid Nunez. The touching story of love and friendship follows a New York writer played by Naomi Watts after the unexpected death of her lifelong friend and mentor.

I’ll go to Prague and that’s it!

Eccentric Bill Murray has stated several times about himself that he is “just an unpleasant guy who can also be charming”. He lives in the present moment and sometimes surprises with small quirks. One example for all:

In 2014, he came to the Berlin International Film Festival to support the war drama The Monuments, where he plays an architect helping to protect valuable art from the Nazis. But he desperately wanted to visit Prague, so he made a quick overnight trip to the Czech capital.

His co-star Matt Damon confirmed it to talk show host Graham Norton at the time: “He’s cool. We were supposed to have a gala dinner, but Bill said he was going to Prague instead. I told him, ‘It’s five hours by train, you’ll get there at midnight!’ And he’s like, ‘Yeah, but I’ve never been there!'” He arrived back at nine o’clock the next morning, just in time to be available to the hungry press.

You know that…

  • He was married twice and has six children. His first wife Margaret Kelly gave him two sons. In 1997, he married costume designer Jennifer Butler, with whom he has four sons. They divorced in 2008.
  • His romance with American singer Kelis Rogers (44) caused a stir last year. After two months, they broke up, according to US Sun. But a source close to them said that Kelis and Bill are still very fond of each other.
  • He lives in New York’s Greenwich Village neighborhood and works constantly.
