A man on a scooter choked a motorcyclist. I was just defending myself, defending myself in court

--

46-year-old Jan Navrátil is now on trial at the Regional Court in Pilsen for bodily harm resulting in death. The prosecutor proposed a sentence of nine years in a maximum security prison for him. The survivors of the deceased demand a total of four million crowns from Navrátil as compensation.

At first it looked like a car accident. A motorcycle off the road and a body lying next to it without signs of life. Emergency services also went to the scene of the reported motorcyclist accident. But in reality there was no accident.

“On the way from the celebration, the defendant got into a conflict with a man on a motorcycle who blamed him for not having lights on. After that, the victim repeatedly hit him in the back of the head so that he fell into the ditch,” described the beginning of the incident, public prosecutor Věra Brázdová.

According to her, the defendant then attacked the motorcyclist, grabbed him by the neck with his hand and choked him until he stopped breathing. He then left the place. By the time bystanders called the paramedics, it was already too late.

“As a result of suffocation, the victim died on the spot,” added the prosecutor.

The accused man told the court that he was very sorry about the whole thing. “I realize that human life has been extinguished. I’m terribly sorry. I have no idea where it came from in me,” Navrátil blurted out with tears in his eyes.

According to him, he left the party in a great mood. “At the intersection, a motorcyclist came up to me and started swearing at me in a psychopathic manner for not having lights. It was the outpouring of a man who was full of hatred. I told him to go ahead, and he drove on,” the accused man described, saying that he considered it settled.

According to him, the motorcyclist drove off after him and should have hit him in the back of the head several times.

“After the second blow, I fell into the escarpment. When I climbed out, he was already there waiting for me. I was afraid he would hurt me. He was a nearly two meter guy weighing over 110 kilos. I knocked him off the bike and onto the ground. He started against me and we started fighting,” Navrátil described the dramatic moments.

“I grabbed his hands and held him around his neck in his tie. I kept telling him to let it go, that he definitely wanted to go home too. At that moment he stopped responding and I let him go,” he added.

After loosening his tie, the motorcyclist seemed to start snoring. “I thought he was winded and fell asleep. I didn’t realize for a second that I would choke him,” the accused man continued.

“Then two young girls arrived. I told them that the biker attacked me and asked them to call the police and wait for them, saying that I was leaving because I didn’t want to mess with them,” he added, adding that he cleared the motorcycle off the road before leaving into the ditch.

The police did not notice the accident

Paramedics were called to the scene as a traffic accident. But they were suspicious that the motorcycle had no damage. The biker’s injuries did not match the accident either.

Based on the detailed description of the witnesses, they immediately started looking for the suspect and arrested him within a few hours.

The trial will continue with the questioning of witnesses.
