The accident happened on Saturday at half past eight in the morning at 376.5. kilometer of the D1 highway near Bohumín in the direction of Poland. A truck carrying a tank on a sleeper stopped in the right lane, behind it was a red passenger car that accompanied the stationary truck.

A video that surfaced on social media captured the tragic moments. A blue truck transporting passenger cars rushed towards the parked cars from behind. But the fifty-four-year-old driver from Lithuania did not brake at all and completely scrapped the small Škoda by pushing it onto the sleeper with the tank.

The collision occurred at the exit and turn from the highway, which is mainly used by emergency services and the Directorate of Roads and Highways. There is also a barrier in place. The truck stopped just a few meters before the turn.

According to police spokeswoman Eva Michalíková, they were waiting for the barrier to open so they could pass and continue to Bohumín. The group was headed to nearby Kopytov for a military combat demonstration. The tank was ordered by the organizers of the event, which was supposed to commemorate the journey of the 1st Czechoslovak tank brigade.

“The driver of the truck driving behind them, who was carrying passenger cars, apparently did not pay attention to the steering and without any braking distance he ran into the stationary Škoda. Two men were traveling in it,” explained police spokeswoman Eva Michalíková.

According to Novinek, the owners of the tank were sitting in the fabia. The 75-year-old driver, who did not survive the accident, and his twenty-four-year-old son. He ended up in a very serious condition in the Ostrava University Hospital, where he was transported by a rescue helicopter.

“The patient is in a serious but stable condition,” said Petra Petlachová, spokeswoman for the Ostrava University Hospital. Another man suffered minor injuries.

Detectives are still working on the case, the driver has been charged with the crimes of negligent homicide and negligent grievous bodily harm. He faces up to six years in prison if convicted.
