The incident took place on the benches behind the boarding islands of one of Brno’s main public transport hubs last year at the beginning of September. The heavily drunk Kaniak was not going to watch the woman being beaten, he took a knife from a fellow homeless man and attacked the soka without warning.
“The victim suffered two stab wounds to the neck, one of which penetrated to the larynx, a stab wound to the back and three wounds to the abdomen. Two penetrated to the liver. He lost about 2.5 liters of blood during the attack,” prosecutor Milan Richter described the bloody affair.

Kaniak defended himself before the senate of the Brno regional court, headed by Dušan Beránek, that he could not explain it. “I’ve fought in the past, but as a man with a man. I saw him beat his mate, and I must have been raking. I’m very sorry, but you probably hear that here all the time,” Kaniak wept in front of the court. “I don’t remember anything about it, I only saw it on camera,” he added.

The entire attack was indeed captured by a city system camera. On the recording shown by the court, it was clearly visible above all that all the participants in the incident were quite drunk. What was surprising was that the attacked person managed to move on despite such injuries.
Judge: Disgusting behavior
The victim himself got angry in front of the court that he had come to pick up his girlfriend and didn’t want her to be drunk. “These fighters, when she had money, they took her down and got her drunk. I just snorted at her to make her recover, and out of nowhere the little man had a knife in his hand. He stabbed me, it sprayed out, then he stabbed me in the stomach,” described the victim.
“But you also committed another disgusting act towards your partner, perhaps you poured something on her head, didn’t you?” asked Judge Beránek. “Well, I poured beer on her head. To wake her up. And they told me: Go to hell, you scumbag,” the man complained. “And after the stabbing, I still have some stress,” he added.
The criminal panel eventually concluded that Kaniak had committed attempted murder and, even given his past, sent him to prison for 14 years. The verdict is not final yet.
