High-ranking Western officials who would normally attend Gorbachev’s farewell will be absent. Also because, in response to Western sanctions due to its invasion of Ukraine, Russia has banned many high-ranking politicians from the European Union, the United States and other Western countries from entering the country.

Among the foreign representatives, ambassadors and diplomats will attend Saturday’s funeral. The American ambassador to Russia John Sullivan or the chargé d’affaires of the German embassy in Moscow should participate. German Ambassador Géza Andreas von Geyr cannot attend, according to a spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry, because he has contracted the coronavirus.

France and Austria also announced the dispatch of their diplomats from their embassies in Russia.
