The Ukrainians surprised, they were supposed to attack the Russians near Kharkiv

The Ukrainian armed forces went on a counter-offensive in the Kharkiv region in the east of the country and unexpectedly attacked a group of Russian troops near the city of Balakliya on Tuesday morning, the BBC Russian newsroom reported. The attack was confirmed by a senior representative of pro-Moscow separatists.

Russian forces are rapidly retreating beyond the North Donets River, according to numerous, though still unofficial, reports, the BBC reported. In addition, pro-Russian channels on the Telegram platform are filled with reports that the Ukrainian army has recaptured the village of Verbivka near Balaklia, where a large arsenal of the Russian army is located. Other sources claim that the Ukrainians have already taken control of the strategically important Balaklia, which had almost 27,000 inhabitants before the war.

Russian troops are moving through Balaklia towards Slovyansk or Kramatorsk in the Donetsk region. There is also a road to the Kupjansk railway station, through which, according to the BBC, most of the military cargo from Russia is transported.

“If the Ukrainians really managed to surprise the Kharkiv area with their operation, it shows how confused the Russian army is,” Phillips O’Brien, who lectures in strategic studies at Scotland’s University of St. Andrews. In his opinion, the Ukrainian counterattack was predictable.

The announcement of Ukraine’s current advance near Kharkiv was a sign that Russian troops are having trouble building up along the front, Mark Hertling, the former commander of US ground forces in Europe, said on Twitter.

Serhii Leshchenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian presidential office, wrote on Twitter that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will announce “good news” regarding the Ukrainian counterattack in the Kharkiv region in the evening, according to Reuters. However, the tweet was later deleted.

In his evening speech, President Volodymyr Zelensky did not mention the operations in the Kharkiv region, but said that five Russian missiles had been shot down on Tuesday, most of them in the south.

In addition, Ukrainian forces are conducting a counter-offensive in the Kherson region in southern Ukraine. On Monday, the adviser to the head of the Ukrainian presidential office, Mykhailo Podolyak, called on the residents of the region and the Crimean peninsula to prepare for the fact that Ukrainian forces will recapture Russian-controlled territories.

According to the available information, they are succeeding – they are mainly attacking the bridges over the Dnieper River and thus endangering thousands of Russian soldiers who could be stuck on the right bank without the possibility of evacuation.

Bridges over the Dnieper have again suffered serious damage in recent days. The road Antonivský most is the target of daily attacks these days. By the morning of Monday, September 5, it was still standing, however, according to reports from Kherson, it is completely unusable. A piece of the bridge at Nová Kakhovka has already collapsed into the water.

In the middle part of the section, in the vicinity of Davydiv Brid, Ukrainian units are slowly advancing. For now, they are expanding the beachhead they created on the very first day of the attack after crossing the Inhulec River near the village of Andriivka.
